Salt Damp Treatment Adelaide

Salt damp is the South Australian term for high salt concentrations associated with rising damp, and the 2008 joint heritage guide puts Adelaide's worse decay down to hot drying summers and very salty soils. Describe the wall and your enquiry goes to one local provider, who inspects it and quotes in writing. Before accepting any quote, ask what mortar, render or paint will go on the wall, whether the downpipes and ground levels have been dealt with first, and what the quote says about the salts already in the brick.

  • We do not treat damp. The provider inspects, then names the price.

Tell us the building, where the damp shows and what has been done to the wall already, and a local provider covering Adelaide will call you back. The enquiry goes to an independent provider, who inspects and quotes in writing. The price is the provider's to set, not ours. Before a quote arrives, the Salt damp treatment costs and rules check lists the heritage guide's lines, the councils' lines and the South Australian building-work lines that can apply to your wall, each with its source.

Four things to settle first

  • Fix the water before the wall The 2008 joint heritage guide says not to insert any form of damp-proof course until the basic housekeeping measures are done and their effect has been watched for at least a year. Downpipes and ground levels come first.
  • Hard cement and paint trap what they cover The guide names hard cement mortar in old joints as driving the damp higher, and the Norwood Payneham & St Peters fact sheet adds a cement render band at the base and paint on old masonry as trapping the moisture.
  • A new damp course leaves the salts behind The council's fact sheet says the wall above a new course still holds salts from decades of earlier rising damp, and the guide says to remove excessive salts as well.
  • Ask who is allowed to do it We found no page saying whether salt damp treatment is building work that a contractor must be authorised for in South Australia, so ask what authority the contractor works under and which work it covers.

Three steps

From enquiry to quote

  1. Tell us about the wall The building, where the damp shows and what has been done to it already.
  2. It is passed on Your enquiry goes to one independent local provider for Adelaide. The provider pays for the introduction; you never do.
  3. A provider inspects and quotes The provider looks at the wall and prices the work in writing. The price is theirs to set.

Salt Damp Treatment across metropolitan Adelaide

The wall that gets this wrong is usually older brick or stone, where the original damp-proof course may be a dark tar-and-sand line a few courses above the ground, as the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters fact sheet describes it. The guide records that failed treatments were common in South Australia in the 1960s and 1970s because the problem was poorly understood; the article on what happened sets out the State's response and what the guide asks for now. Four suburb pages rest on a State heritage or council page each: Port Adelaide, Colonel Light Gardens, Norwood and Adelaide.
